Structure of Indigenous Child Welfare

About Canada's Structure of Child Welfare Project (2009-2013):

The child welfare system in Canada has a decentralized structure in which responsibility for protecting and supporting children at risk of abuse and neglect falls under the jurisdiction of the provinces/territories and a system of Indigenous child welfare organizations. All provincial and territorial child welfare systems share certain basic characteristics. However, there is considerable variation in the organization of service delivery systems, child welfare statutes, regulations and standards, assessment tools and competency-based training programs; this variation is even more pronounced when it comes to child welfare services for Indigenous children and families.

Provided below are a range of information sheets about Aboriginal child welfare in Canada. The article, The structure of Aboriginal child welfare in Canada (Sinha & Kozlowski, 2013), summarizes these information sheets.
